Buildings

There are 3 buildings situated on a ridge overlooking the Tutukaka Coast.

  • The house is 13.5m x 6.4m, total floor space of 86 sqm, it is facing north-east.
  • The double garage is 9m x 6m, total floor space of 54 sqm, of which 1/3 is workshop.
  • The guest cottage is 4m x 3.1m, total floor space of 12.4 sqm.

The house was built by Initial Homes in 1987, a solid wood construction with a colored steel roof. The siding is of low maintenance concrete fibre.
The interior consists of an open living area, kitchen-dining-living, with an open fireplace. Cooking and water heating is with LPG gas. The water supply is rain water, coming from a 20 000 litre tank. It is ample, since the catchment area of the 2 roofs is very big.
There are 2 bedrooms, one bathroom and one office.

The garage has generous parking for 2 vehicles and an additional bathroom with shower, toilet and laundry. The workshop has 3 workbenches at different heights, with a covered outside work area. There is also a little shed for garden tools.

The cosy little guest cottage has a kitchenette and is equipped with a fireplace.
There is a queen size bed on the ground level and another one on the mezzanine floor.

All buildings were fully renovated and up-graded in 2005.

Other information

Although it is only 25 minutes into Whangarei, the next town, and 10 minutes into Ngunguru, the next settlement, this place offers total privacy and peace.

This property is of high ecological significance, apart from the small residential area the whole land is covered in beautiful, mature native forest.

We have the rare Northland Brown Kiwis living and breading in close proximity of the house. At night they can be heard calling and we frequently see them in the garden. There are also many other native birds in abundance, as well as the rare Tree Weta and other magnificent insects. For these reasons this property is absolutely not suited for pet owners.

The marina in Tutukaka, a 15 minutes drive away, is the gateway to Poor Knights Islands which offer world class diving. From here it is just a day trip by sailing boat to the Bay of Islands or the Great Barrier Island. In fact this part of New Zealand is a spectacular playground for people interested in any kind of water sports, from sailing, surfing, diving, fishing, to kayaking. There is a big community of underwater photographers.

In Tutukaka there are 3 restaurants and 2 bars, as well as various hotels and motels.

The population on this coast consists mostly of life-stylers, of which many are Europeans and Americans. There are many yachties and ex-yachties, who have arrived by boat and stayed for good.

Life in general is pretty quiet out here. There are many creative people around, as well as passionate environmentalists.
It is best suited for self-contained nature lovers like ourselves, who work from home or are retired.

Gardening is very popular in NZ, as things can be grown all year round.
My raised, organic vegetable garden, is supplying us with all the vegetables we need, without having to spend much time on it. It is fully enclosed, so the feathered and furry creatures of the forest can’t help themselves and it has an irrigation system. In the herb garden I grow mostly culinary and medicinal plants. Around the cottage I keep a wild garden where I encourage wild flowers and herbs, as well as edible mushrooms.

For people who like physical exercise, there is a small outdoor gym. A beautiful walk along the bush, with stunning views over the coast, starts right by the gate.

The whole property is designed for low maintenance, as we travel frequently.
